Lauren & Toby’s day was nestled within the wooded and farmed heartland of southwest Michigan. That day, MillCreek Barn hosted some of the most genuine, heartfelt, and beautiful moments I’ve ever seen on a wedding day. A certain summer camp vibe filled the air as these two prepped for their nuptials in a bridal cabin and trailer home labeled “Man Camp.” I knew from the beginning that the day would be filled with emotions as Lauren began writing a letter for Toby, and I was reassured when they exchanged sweet hugs and kisses when seeing each other for the first time.
After getting back from taking portraits, I spotted Lauren’s grandfather walking away from the barn. I asked Lauren if she’d like to go greet him, and she did so with a bit of hesitation, and I wondered why. It had to have been because she knew he was going to melt when he saw her; and that’s exactly what he did.
I quickly befriended the wedding party having exchanged hot dog jokes in a New York accent with them. Still some of the hardest laughs I’ve had with wedding folks.
The sun broke through, and the ceremony commenced. They washed each other’s feet to prove their willingness to serve one another whole-heartedly and steadfastly for the rest of their lives, and it made Lauren giggle a bit too.
As we continued to celebrate into the evening, I pulled them both aside for some portraits as the sun began to set. I told them how honored I was to capture their day and that it was honestly one of the most genuine, heartfelt weddings I had ever captured. Lauren responded with “I will remember you saying that for the rest of my life.” I didn’t know how to respond. How is it that I get to be a part of so many peoples’ lifelong memories? I can’t believe that I have the opportunity to create the images that will last for generations and generations to come.
Confession: I was really sick on the way to this wedding, and I thought to myself “just get through it.” Lauren, Toby, thank you for being so real and loving each other so much, because honestly, I did not feel sick at any point capturing your day.
